What If Your Emotions Are Offering You Wisdom?

Have you ever had a moment when anxiety, worry, or overwhelm seemed to come out of nowhere? Maybe it was triggered by a news headline, a social media post, or even a mistake at work. Suddenly, your chest feels tight, your stomach knots up, and that familiar thought creeps in: “Something’s wrong” or “Something bad is going to happen.”

One of my clients used to experience this often. Each time those feelings hit, she’d reach out, frustrated that they kept showing up despite all the inner work she had done. “I’ve worked so hard on myself—why do I still feel this way?” she asked.

I reminded her of a truth we all need to hear sometimes: This work isn’t about never feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or unsure. It’s about learning to notice those feelings as messages—subtle signals from your mind, body, and soul that something needs attention. These emotions aren’t setbacks; they’re information. They’re guiding you toward what needs to shift.

Instead of getting stuck in those feelings, the key is to reach into your self-care and self-regulation toolbox. It’s about knowing how to shift your energy so you can feel the way you want to feel—peaceful, happy, calm, confident, and connected with your loved ones and work.

3 Simple Ways to Tune In to Your Emotions and Reconnect

  1. Pause and Acknowledge: When uncomfortable emotions arise, pause and acknowledge them without judgment. Simply noticing what you’re feeling creates space for awareness and choice.
  2. Ask Yourself, “What Is This Feeling Telling Me?” Your emotions often highlight areas where your needs aren’t being met or where boundaries are needed. Get curious about what they’re revealing.
  3. Use Your Self-Care Toolbox: Whether it’s deep breathing, journaling, movement, or stepping outside for fresh air, lean into the tools that help you shift from stress to calm. Consistent practices strengthen your ability to regulate and respond with intention.

So, take a moment to reflect:

  • How do I want to feel most days?
  • What tends to pull me away from that feeling?
  • What can I do to reconnect with that feeling when I notice I’ve drifted?

Remember, your emotions are simply guiding you back to your power—the power to choose what you need in that moment.
