We all have areas in life where we want to improve—whether it’s our health, relationships, business, or personal growth. But the one thing that often stands between us and the change we desire isn’t a lack of knowledge, talent, or even motivation. It’s consistency.
Consistency is what transforms small actions into big results. It’s what makes habits stick and turns intentions into realities. Yet, it’s also one of the hardest things to maintain because it requires effort, accountability, and a willingness to push through resistance until things get easier.
Why Is Consistency So Hard?
Let’s be honest—sticking with new habits isn’t always fun. It takes discipline, and at times, it feels like you’re not seeing immediate rewards. That’s when most people give up, thinking, “Well, this just isn’t working.” But real change doesn’t come from a single grand gesture; it comes from small, repeated actions over time.
Personal Example #1: Weight Loss & Healthy Habits
I’ve had my own struggles with consistency, especially when it comes to staying active and making mindful food choices as I get busier…and older. I used to wonder why my pants were still snug after what I thought was a “good” week. Then I realized I wasn’t being as consistent as I believed.
Sure, I exercised most days, but I also mindlessly snacked, had that extra glass of wine, and spent too much time sitting while caught up in work. The result? My efforts didn’t add up the way I expected. True progress happens when healthy habits and choices become the norm, not the exception.
Personal Example #2: Training My Puppy
Another great example? Training my puppy. He loves to jump up and greet people when they walk through the door. I know that if I consistently correct this behavior by reinforcing the “off” command and withholding attention until he calms down, he’ll learn.
But if I sometimes let him jump or my family rewards him with affection despite the rule, what happens? He keeps jumping! Because to him, the message isn’t clear. The same applies to our own habits—when we send ourselves mixed signals by sometimes showing up and sometimes not, we stay stuck in the same cycle.
Personal Example #3: Consistency in Business
In business, consistency is just as critical. If I don’t follow through with messaging, client engagement, or delivering on my promises, it impacts my success and my clients’ trust. Opportunities don’t magically appear—we create them by showing up again and again, even when results aren’t immediate.
The Awareness Factor
The first step to building consistency is awareness. Ask yourself:
- What area of your life do you want to/ need to change?
- What small, consistent actions will get you there?
- What excuses or patterns keep you from following through?
How to Stay Consistent (Even When It’s Hard)
- Make It Manageable – Don’t aim for perfection; aim for progress. Small, sustainable changes are better than big, overwhelming ones that don’t last.
- Hold Yourself Accountable – Keep a habit tracker, set reminders, or tell a friend about your goal.
- Get Support – Having a coach or mentor can help you stay on track when motivation dips. (That’s what I help my clients do!)
- Expect Resistance – You won’t always feel like doing the work. That’s normal. But if you push through, it will get easier.
- Focus on the Long-Term Payoff – Remind yourself why you started and what consistency will lead to in the long run.
