Have you ever gotten a panicked phone call from a friend or from your child?

I was at the airport picking up my oldest son when my phone vibrates with a text, then it rings.

It is my 16 year old, new driver son… hysterical.

“Mom, the car broke down and I don’t know what to do!”

“Slow down, buddy.  Breathe.  Are you safe?”

“Yes, I pulled over to the side of the road.”

“OK.  Where are you?”  He tells me, and it is about 5-6 miles from home.

“What are you so upset about?”

“That I’m going to be stuck here!”

This is the brain stressed out… it goes to worst case scenario and cannot problem solve.

In this situation, the worst case scenario, he walks home.

When our brain gets the “danger” signal, and we get caught in the “fight or flight” survival spin, the rational brain shuts down.  Instead of being able to problem solve and tap into what we know and what we remember, the brain gets stuck in the “danger,” emotional, doom and gloom catastrophic thinking loop.  This is what I call a ‘stress spin.’

Now, stress and what we determine to be “danger” or a threat is based on the individual’s perception, our stress resiliency, our emotions and our past experiences.  So what we perceive to be stressful, what throws us into a stress spin really is different for all of us.

Maybe you are an anxious person and automatically go to “worst case scenario” thinking, like my son.

Maybe you have had numerous challenges back to back and you are feeling vulnerable and exhausted.  Famous stress researcher, Han’s Selye, found that repeated stressful events with little to no recovery time can create “exhaustion” as the body’s adaptation response can no longer recover.  It gets depleted.

Or, maybe you do not feel safe and secure within yourself, or with your ability to handle whatever life throws your way.  This is what I see a lot.  This, and a combination of all of the above.
